Gambia is een geweldig vogelparadijs. Met ruim 600 verschillende soorten  vogels is het één van de beste gebieden in West-Afrika op vogelexcursie te gaan.

Gambia, bestaat uit een tamelijk smalle oost-west-strook langs de rivier de Gambia. Gambia is 327 kilometer lang en slechts enige tientallen kilometers breed. Gambia is het kleinste land van het Afrikaanse vasteland.

Brufut-bos

 

Het Brufut-bos is een prachtig gebied om vogels te spotten, dichtbij de belangrijkste vakantieoorden van Gambia. Het gebied bestaat uit open bos en een klein stukje dicht bos. Een prachtige plek om vogels te spotten, zoals de langstaartnachtzwaluw, die je hier van dichtbij kunt zien. Verder kom je in deze mooie omgeving vele andere vogelsoorten tegen, zoals de Violet Turaco, African Harrier- Havik, Senegal Coucal, Green Turaco, African Pied Hornbill en nog veel meer…

 

 

The Brufut Forest is a beautiful area for birdwatching, close to Gambia's main holiday resorts. The area consists of open forest and a small patch of dense forest. A wonderful place to spot birds such as the long-tailed nightjar, which you can see up close here. Furthermore, in this beautiful environment you can encounter many bird species such as the Violet Turaco, African Harrier Hawk, Senegal Coucal, Green Turaco, African Pied Hornbill and many more….

 

Tanji

 

Het Tanji vogelreservaat ligt ook vlakbij de resorts aan de kustlijn. Het bestaat uit de riviermonding van de Tanji rivier en de Bijilo eilandjes. Dit reservaat is een belangrijke broedplaats van sterns en meeuwen. In dit gebied komen meer dan 250 vogels soorten voor, waaronder ijsvogels en meer dan 30 verschillende roofvogels. Of ga eens kijken op het strand bij Tanji! Overdag een rustig kustdorpje maar elke namiddag verandert het in een prachtig schouwspel van vishandel, wanneer de vissers terugkeren met de dagelijkse vangst. 

 

The Tanji Bird Sanctuary is also close to the resorts on the coastline. It consists of the estuary of the Tanji River and the Bijilo islets. This reserve is an important breeding ground for terns and gulls. More than 250 bird species occur in this area, including kingfishers and more than 30 different birds of prey. Or take a look at the beach at Tanji! A quiet coastal village every day, it turns into a beautiful spectacle of fishing trade every afternoon when the fishermen return with the day's catch.

 

HBN Hut Gambia

 

De HBN Hut in Gambia is een ruime hut met een waterbak die zo is gemaakt dat er een fraai laag standpunt wordt verkregen. Toch is dit een hut in een land met totaal andere omstandigheden, dus verwacht niet de luxe van de bekende HBN-locaties. We hebben hier onder andere te maken met alles vernielende termieten en de kans op het kraken door mensen die onderdak zoeken. De vogels komen als magneten op het water af en daar maken we graag gebruik van. Al kunt u zich tevens voorstellen wat een klus het is om hier dagelijks water beschikbaar te houden. Yankuba verzorgd en onderhoud deze fotolocatie en is de gastheer van de fotografen die er gebruik van maken. Hij zal u brengen en weer ophalen, maar natuurlijk kan hij ook de hele dag aan uw zijde blijven. De opbrengsten van deze hut gaan volledig naar zijn familie, die op deze manier fatsoenlijk kan eten en gebruik kan maken van medische zorg. Daarnaast kunnen zijn kinderen van de opbrengsten naar school. Een geweldig doel toch?

 

A spacious hut with a watertank that is designed in such a way that a nice low position is achieved. Yet this is a hut in a country with completely different circumstances, so don't expect the luxury of the well-known HBN locations. We are dealing with, among other things, destructive termites and the risk of squatting by people looking for shelter. The birds are attracted to water like magnets, so we like to take advantage of that, although you can imagine what a job it is to keep water available here every day. Yankuba Tamba takes care of and maintains this photo location and will therefore be the host of the visiting photographers. He will drop you off and pick you up again, but of course he can also stay with you all day. The proceeds from this hut go entirely to his family, who can thus eat decent food and benefit from medical care. It also ensures that the children can go to school. A wonderful goal, right?

 

Kotu-Creek

 

De Kotu-kreek en de vlak daarbij gelegen watervijvers werken als een magneet voor vogels, vooral in het droge seizoen van november tot april. Deze locatie ligt doorgaans op loopafstand van de hotels en is dus gemakkelijk te bereiken. Vanaf de brug en langs de Kotu-kreek kun je prachtige vogels zien en vinden, waaronder de Bonte IJsvogel, Breedbek scharrelaar, Groene Bijeneter, Zwarte reiger, Sporenkievit, Zwarte wouw en nog veel meer. Of huur een kano en zie deze prachtige locatie vanaf het water! Ook voor dit prachtige gebied kun je Yankuba inhuren.  

 

The Kotu Creek and the nearby water ponds act as a magnet for birds, especially in the dry season from November to April. This location is often within walking distance of the hotels, so it is easy to reach. From the bridge and along the Kotu creek you can see and find beautiful birds such as the Pied Kingfisher, Broad-billed Roller, Green Bee-eater, Black Heron, Spurred Lapwing, Black Kite and much more. Or rent a canoe and see this beautiful location from the water! You can hire Yankuba for visiting this beautiful area as well.

 

Marakissa

 

Dit gebied bevindt zich op ongeveer een kilometer of zes van de grens met Senegal. Een prachtige omgeving die gelegen is aan de Allahein rivier en vooral bestaat uit bossen en moeraslandschap.

Hier kom je veel vogelsoorten tegen, zoals de Reuzen IJsvogel, verschillende soorten Honingspeurders, Zwarte Porseleinhoen, Hamerkop, Senegalese Griel en nog veel meer…

Een aanrader is om met Yankuba een kanotrip te maken over de rivier en zo compleet in een andere wereld terecht te komen.
